Tue 19th Feb Finishing up your writing!

Image: Increase the Effort
Hope your 2nd-year projects have been coming on well. This weeks task is to finish up your Lit Review. If you have been following on over the last couple of weeks this task should only take an hour.

There was only 16 submitted and I have three main areas for feedback that all the papers should consider:
  • Paragraphs should contain only one main idea with the research you have found supporting that an example of a paragraph layout might:
    • Sentence 1 - introduction to the paragraph theme(idea)
    • Sentence 2 what the theme(idea) is,
    • Sentence 3 what the research you have found says about the theme(idea) and supports your view
    • Sentence 4 conclusions of the paragraph
  • Note each paragraph should not be on each paper that you have read, they should be the themes emanating from the paper so for example
    • theme 1 might have been in 3 papers,
    • theme 2 might have been discussed in 6 papers
    • theme 3 might have been discussed in only 1 paper.
in that case, you would expect paragraphs 1 and 2 to be larger than paragraph 3
  • Introduction and conclusions are written last, as they are paragraphs they need to be more than two sentences. the introduction should signpost the reader to what they will read and the conclusion should wrap up the writing though not introduce any new material. think of RTE news, they briefly tell you the news, then go into detail, then at the end tell you the news briefly again.
  • Lastly, don't use the word 'I', this paper should be written in 3rd person
Don't worry if you are finding this difficult, many students struggle with this and for most of you it's your first opportunity to carry out research and write about it. I can see the effort in your writing and it's great to see- its a sign of the real learning taking place
